Large Language Models are not just technical systems. They have become the new industrial engines of knowledge — and like all engines, they can either be refined to run efficiently or burn themselves out.

Right now, they are heading for burnout.

These systems were built with good intentions: to help people access information, learn faster, and extend creativity. But in their current form, they do the opposite. They concentrate power, consume enormous resources, and quietly strip ownership from the very people who created the data that feeds them.

We are told this is progress, but it looks more like a digital gold rush — everyone digging up the same land until there’s nothing left.

The illusion of intelligence

At their heart, LLMs are pattern machines. They don’t think, they predict. They take what has already been written, re-assemble it, and deliver it with the confidence of a human expert. But confidence is not the same as truth. When the model is wrong — when it invents facts, misrepresents a source, or plagiarises — the responsibility doesn’t vanish into the machine. It lands on whoever deployed it.

That is where the next crisis lies.

The litigation wave

The European Commission is now considering a framework that would make corporations legally liable for errors caused by AI systems — whether those errors involve defamation, misinformation, discrimination, or financial loss. If this happens, it will mark the first major step in shifting accountability from the algorithm to the human institution behind it.

Imagine a company that uses an AI to generate investment advice, medical notes, or HR decisions. If the system fabricates a figure, misdiagnoses a patient, or rejects a candidate unfairly, the company will be exposed — not the software. The cost won’t be theoretical. It will be measured in lawsuits, payouts, and lost public trust.

The same principle will eventually extend across all industries. Those who rely on “black-box” models without tight risk frameworks will discover that the very tool they used to cut costs will become a financial liability.

The problem of ownership

LLMs are trained on humanity’s collective writing — everything from classic literature to Reddit threads. But nobody asked for permission, and very few people are paid. What was once public knowledge is now fenced off behind corporate walls. It’s as if the world’s libraries were emptied overnight and their contents resold page by page.

That isn’t innovation. It’s appropriation.

If these models are to have a future, ownership must be addressed head-on. Contributors should have a say in how their data is used, and communities should have access to the systems trained on their work. Without this, AI becomes the opposite of democratic — a monopoly on knowledge disguised as progress.

The resource trap

The scale of these systems is staggering. Training a large model can use as much water as a small town and as much energy as a fleet of aircraft. Every new “upgrade” demands more of both. The industry celebrates each expansion as a breakthrough, but it’s like cheering the size of your car engine while ignoring the fuel bill and the smoke.

If these trends continue, the environmental and financial costs will overwhelm the benefits. That’s why efficiency must become the next great measure of intelligence.

Smarter design, modular architecture, and smaller, task-specific models could achieve more with less. A shift toward distributed, locally trained systems would reduce both cost and risk. In other words, the future of AI lies not in size, but in elegance — models that are built with purpose, not just power.

Democracy and control

The way LLMs are built today mirrors an old political structure: a few large entities decide what information is gathered, how it’s processed, and who gets access. The rest of us simply consume the output. It’s efficient for the companies, but it’s deeply undemocratic.

Democracy depends on transparency — knowing where information comes from, how it’s shaped, and who benefits. Yet the workings of LLMs are opaque even to their creators. When people can’t tell why an AI produced a certain result, they can’t challenge it. That is the opposite of accountability.

To rebuild trust, we need models that are open, inspectable, and governed by shared standards. Just as public utilities brought clean water and electricity to all, we now need public AI frameworks that guarantee ethical sourcing, energy efficiency, and explainability.

Corporate risk and the coming collapse

Corporations that ignore this shift are walking blindfolded toward a cliff. The pattern is familiar: overconfidence, overexpansion, and eventual collapse. History is full of examples — industries that ignored early warnings because the profits seemed unstoppable. The LLM sector is repeating that cycle, but faster.

The warning signs are already visible: lawsuits from artists and publishers, energy shortages, growing regulatory pressure, and user fatigue from unreliable outputs. The bigger the model, the bigger the problem.

Unless reform comes soon, the collapse will not be dramatic; it will be gradual — a slow bleed of trust, money, and legitimacy. Systems will become too expensive to run, too risky to deploy, and too inaccurate to rely on.

Redemption through efficiency

If developers focus on design rather than size, if corporations adopt strict internal governance, and if regulators demand transparency instead of secrecy, AI can become what it was meant to be: a partner, not a parasite.

Imagine smaller, well-trained systems that learn within defined domains — medicine, law, education — each supervised by experts and open to audit. Imagine networks that share data ethically, conserve energy, and return value to the communities that built them.

That version of AI would not only survive — it would redeem the technology. It would turn efficiency into a moral principle, not just a technical goal.

The choice

Reform is not a threat to innovation; it is the condition for its survival. Corporations that act now — to reduce size, improve governance, and protect data ownership — will be the ones left standing when the dust settles. Those that don’t will face the legal, financial, and environmental consequences of their negligence.

The question is not whether reform is coming. It’s whether we are wise enough to start before the collapse begins.
